Ngamba Sanctuary – Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

The island is located 23kilometres South East of Entebbe and is on a 100-acre piece of land of which 95 acres are forested and separated from the human camp with an electric fence. Ngamba chimpanzee sanctuary is located on Lake Victoria and is an NGO responsible for all aspects of the sanctuary home to 52 rescued and orphaned chimpanzees.

This Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust is also committed and involved in field conservation as well as community education, working closely with the Uganda Government and other wildlife authorities.

The sanctuary aims at providing a safe home for rescued chimpanzees while also caring for the environment and other wildlife on the island. Providing high-quality educational experiences for all the visitors and benefiting the local communities.

Activities at Ngamba sanctuary

Day and night trips: The sanctuary offers both day and overnight trips and this gives the visitors the opportunity to closely observe man’s closest relatives while in their unique setting.

Overnight excursions: Spend more than a night at Ngamba Eco lodge as you get to enjoy several chimpanzee feedings

Volunteer programs:

Ngamba sanctuary offers one-week and three-week volunteer programs. This helps to create awareness as well as educate the public about the importance of these closest relatives

Sunset cruises: This is mainly offered to overnight guests as they get to enjoy the most unique views of fishermen casting their nets, and fishing villages as they wind up the day.

Fishing

Go for a full or half-day fishing excursion on Lake Victoria with UK-certified fishing guides. Get a chance to catch Nile Perch, one of the largest fish in the world.

A secondary forest at Ngamba sanctuary is also a habitat for chimpanzees and other wildlife species like spiders, fruit bats, fish eagles monitor lizards, and otters.

Getting to Ngamba Sanctuary

Ngamba island sanctuary can be accessed by booking a boat and this can be done at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre(UWEC). On a motorized canoe, you can take an hour and a half to reach Ngamba sanctuary.
